FREDDIE BARTHOLOMEW: Boy Wonder

“It’s so fun having something to do all day.”

Second only to Shirley Temple, compact, cherubic, curly-haired FREDDIE BARTHOLOMEW (1924-2012) became one of the most popular and acclaimed cinemoppets of the late 1930s. Dubbed “the George Arliss of child stars,” the boy had minor stage and film experience when he was selected over thousands to play the title role of DAVID COPPERFIELD (1935). Hitting overnight stardom, he went on to appear in such MGM classics as ANNA KARENINA (1936), LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY (1936) and CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS (1937). The combination of family scandal, WWII duty and growing out of his cuteness severely hurt his chances of moving into adult work and he quickly moved behind the scenes.
